AKAROA BACH
Akaroa, Banks Peninsula, New Zealand
Facing North overlooking Manuka bush & rural farmland, this CLT Bach provides a base for relaxation and retreat. In response to the clients brief it was important the bach be functional, flexible, space efficient and provide a sense of comfort & warmth.
The Bach takes the simple & optimised design of the Warrander Studio, extending it three extra meters in length, generating additional space for a bunkroom as well as larger living spaces below. Clad with a timber rain screen, the system softens the wind blown rain, cohesively wrapping the building’s exterior.
The design was altered to respond to the site context & existing trees, with generous doors off the dining area opening up to an extended deck space to the north west. The steep slope sitting in behind the bach provided the opportunity for a first floor bridged entrance to be established, spanning from the road above.
Downstairs the open plan dining, kitchen and living utilise built-in joinery to maximise space and efficiency. Upstairs accommodates two bedrooms, one bunk room, separate toilet & bathroom.
