THE CRESCENT
Wellington, New Zealand
An ambitious and unwavering vision for a restricted but spectacular site, within a tightly established neighbourhood, created an intricate & highly resolved home. One that delicately worked with its opportunities and imposed constraints with a sense of permanence, longevity, refined scale, generosity and restraint.
The site was previously a backyard for the neighbour below & included beautiful established trees. Most notably, the significant and established Pōhutukawa, stunning old apple and structural tī kōuka - it was important these trees were protected & celebrated in the new home’s design giving a strong sense of permanence and privacy. Responding to the existing topography, the plan gently climbs up over 5 levels, transitioning through areas of expansion and compression, defining spatial identities & boundaries.
Located in a prominent position on the brow of Roseneath’s peninsula, the home enjoys expansive views & framed moments while seated comfortably amongst established properties. Looking out to the west gains views of Oriental Bay, Wellington CBD, the Port and hills beyond. While the south west corner, captures views over the water towards Shelly Bay & the Miramar Peninsular.
This home is the result of tenacious energy and unwavering commitment to creating a sensitive design that utilises a previously inaccessible site amongst an established and prestigious Wellington neighborhood. Adding to the tight and rambling built fabric that speaks to Wellington's unique residential identity.
