PEARCE PLACE

South Island, New Zealand

Pearce Place was designed in response to the site, sloping down towards the North and West aspects in order to prioritise views, sunshine and shelter from the prevailing winds. The layered roof planes sit in response to this landscape, tilting upward toward the East to bring in morning light through the clearstory windows, adding height & spaciousness to the interior living spaces. Extended eaves surround the home, allowing sun shading and protection from the hot summer sunshine, while bi-folding doors open up to connect with extended deck areas.

The home consists of three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and open plan living space. It is constructed from CLT panels, a response to the clients desire to make use of sustainably sourced materials and ensure the environment remains warm, dry and healthy. The southern wing has been clad in vertical corrugate for low maintenance & climatic resilience, a material used frequently on local mountain huts in the region.

The split floor levels provide an interior spatial shift allowing the upper bedroom and bathroom level to maintain a sense of privacy and retreat for guests, while allowing the home to accommodate with ease. Integrated storage throughout the home maintains clean lines, while being accessed from hallway circulation spaces. A seamless flush tiled hearth stretches across the northern living area, providing additional thermal mass for increased performance and comfort. Lifemark Standards were integrated within the planning to support accessibility and mobility.
